History
The town of Waynesborough was first developed along the banks of the Neuse River around the county courthouse that was built there when Wayne County was formed in 1789. Following in the late 1830’s, the Weldon Railroad line was built to the east of Waynesborough, at the intersection of the railroad and the New Bern Road a hotel was built and a community began to establish itself.
Goldsborough’s Junction which was named after Major Matthew T. Goldsborough, an Assistant Chief Engineer with the railroad line, would later became known as the town of Goldsborough which was incorporated in 1847, and then the official name change happened in 1869 to what is now widely known as Goldsboro. This city encompasses over 25 square miles with a transportation center for the area’s agriculture industry, and has been the county seat for Wayne County since 1847… Learn more about the history of Goldsboro NC
